So says this young talented new act, from Ghetto ruff, born in Tladi but raised in Zola, township that has brought up many artists such as Zola, Mapaputsi, Brickz and Mandoza. Kamohelo Mkhonza well known as Slice, he is what we call the product of kwaito and hip hop which is now titled Kwai-Hop.
Slice has been fortunate to work with kwaito producer extraordinaire Kaybee who has produced for artists as, Zola, Ishmael, Skeem and more. Kaybee started working on Slices album in 2003 working on the first track entitled Staggish (township lingo for the bomb).
Slice shares some of his experience, in his music. As he says; It is like taking your audience on this life experience, hip hop followers will get a glimpse of kwaito maturing and and kwaito lovers will experince the growth of hip hop. This young artist grew up writing lyrics and poems. He matriculated in 2000, and wanted to do journalism, influenced by the love of writing, but couldnt finish his studies at College Campus, due to financial problems, and what a blessing it was for the music industry, as he describes himself as an offering to the industry.
With the experience he got while at school, when he shared the stage with big acts such as, Boom Shaka, Mafikizolo and Arthur, he bagan to think that the the sky was the only limit, and was recently blessed with performing alonside Pitch Black Afro, Brickz, Zola, Morafe, Bravo, Ishmael, Maggz, Pro-kid, Omen, Tuks, Malik, Amu and Crazy Lu at the Tsotsi sound track premier, Feb. and has previously performed at an HIV concert in Dube, the Soweto Arts and Culture festival, Mr and Miss Soweto in Orlando west.
We learn a lot of things from each other, was one of the facts that Slice learnt when his mother died. His music now comes from the people, what he sees, hears and fantacises about. If he could change anything, it would be to bring his mother back, so she could rejoice on his success.
In his music he raps about the life he sees eKasi, his appreciation for woman, his feelings on the AIDS epedemic, but you will find a few party tracks to get the dance floor rocking.
Slice believes that he is just an ordinary guy from eKasi, with a dream and talent. But with the amount of talent that Slice has it is no longer a dream but a reality with the release of his debut album entitled 1 Sli. He called it 1 Sli because he is his offering to the industry.
